JAZZ CHOIR

 

Description:

A performing ensemble for seasoned musicians with intermediate/advanced skill level on their given instrument.   Rehearsals take place at 6am on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Jazz Choir consists of Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass voices combined with rhythm section (piano, bass, guitar, drumset). The Jazz Choir sings in all styles of Jazz to include funk, blues, swing, ballad, and be-bop. Improvosation is a major part of Jazz Choir. Performances and participation are major portions of the grading criteria.

 

What is Jazz Choir?

Prequisite: Spring and/or Fall audition

Open to vocalists and capable instrumentalists who have had at least 2 years of High School Band/Choir experience.

This ensemble is intended for the advanced musicians--no matter what age (9/10/11/12).

 

Who is in Jazz Choir?

Usually, grades 10-12 with a few Freshmen who have passed the stringent audition.

Voices--Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass

Instruments--Piano/bass/drums/Guitar/Other solo instruments

 

What happens in Jazz Choir?

Advanced Jazz techniques are emphasized (swing/bop/blues/improvisation).

memorization of tunes.

A lot of performances.

 

What's the best part?

Two or three on a part.

Sectionals on own time.

Weekend festivals

Group bonding!
